Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
