Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Major Role in the Ashes

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on November 21 in Perth.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.

"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors at play, aside from the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in four years.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the contest.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
